Our adventures began at Georgetown University before our freshman year classes had even started. We had chatted on the phone, danced at a dorm party and even enjoyed a barbeque with Dave’s parents before our first date…

Melissa: “Hi. This is David Andretta's roommate. Will you go to the ‘Razz Your Roommate’ dance with him?” “Um…ok.” “Cool. Bye.” In a phone call which lasted less than one minute, I had sealed my fate! I ran into Dave a few days later and we discussed the dress for the dance which he indicated was casual. The big night finally arrived and I was all set to go in my cute new jean skirt and tank top.
It was September 23, 1995 and about an hour before we were supposed to meet up, Dave called. “Hi. Ummmm, all the girls here are in formal dresses for the dance.” Lovely. I frantically ran through my dorm, borrowing a dress from my new friend who would end up being my sophomore, junior and senior year roommate, Ms. Jennifer "Buttah" Farmer. I also managed to scrounge up a pearl necklace and earrings from another girl. I was all set, except for the shoes. Several of us scoured the dorm for a size 10 to no avail. Finally, a girl on the lacrosse team offered up her size 11 ½ shoes with 3 inch heels. "Uhhh, so that will make me 6'5"... I’ll take ‘em!”
David: At least it wasn' t Pizza Hut. After meeting up, we headed to Uno’s for our pre-dance dinner. They serve deep dish Chicago style pizza which is much fancier! Anyway, the point is we enjoyed it. In fact, we kinda lost of track of time. Usually first dates are supposed to be awkward and stiff, but we really seemed to mesh well. In fact, I’m not sure when we finally got to the dance, which was supposed to be the premise of the date.

Melissa: As you may have guessed, the first date went well. As did the second date, third date, fourth date and before you know it, we were an item.
David: If you are viewing this website, then you have already been introduced to “The Adventures of Dave and Mel”. There have been so many that I’ve lost track, but I’ll never forget one of the first, our very own European Vacation. This jaunt through Europe produced many a classic quote. My all time favorite probably took place in France just outside Paris when it was Mel’s chance to be “Directions/Map Person.” We just didn’t seem to be making our way towards the city when I asked her to check the map. She assured me that we were following the train tracks and that they would head right to the city. When I reminded her that train tracts go in two directions; the look on her face was priceless.
Other moments were a little different and by different I mean tense. On the same trip, we took a train from Paris to Versailles. As we got off the train I asked Mel for our Fanny-Pack which contained our passports, money, train tickets, etc. Let’s just say that we had a long trip back into Paris. Fortunately, “we” had just left it at the ticket counter, where the ticket attendant had been safe guarding our “entire trip”.

We both love to travel, so it was fitting that Dave popped the question during a reprisal of our first trip to Europe together. He had always joked that it takes at least ten years to really start to know someone. We had almost known each other that long when he began planning this trip which originally was set to be a ski trip to Norway. During the planning, Dave started acting very strange and all of a sudden became… very organized! I suspected something may be in the works. Our first stop was Paris. No luck. Next was Venice. No luck again! At this point I began to think it might take 20 years for him to start to get to know me. We’d been to two of the most romantic cities in the world and no ring!?! It was time for Match.com!
For adventure number 16, we had been planning for a ski trip to Norway for months. The only problem was that Norway didn’t get any snow that year. In a last ditch change of plans, we decided to have a last Eurorail fling before we were too old to buy the discount passes. Mel was kinda expecting me to ask her something special during this trip. However, she was a little surprised when nothing special happened in Paris or Venice. Of course, when the moment finally did come in a snow filled field under the moonlight of a Slovenian sky with gorgeous mountains in the background, her first reaction was… to hit me. I guess I was expecting a slightly different response. Eventually she said yes and that’s how we ended up here.
By Wednesday, February 9, I had given up hope. With no expectations, I felt less apprehensive and as a result we had a fantastic day exploring Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. That evening we headed to Kranjska Gora, a small ski village in the Julien Alps. I will never forget how beautiful the sky was and how surprised I was when Dave began singing to me then got down on one knee and pulled out a ring. I was so shocked, I actually did hit him… but it was a hit of love! By eventually saying “yes” he means 15 seconds later when I had regained my ability to speak.
The adventures have only just begun…
